Student Visa Details

Every foreign student who intends to study in Italy must obtain an Italian student visa before entering into Italy. To be sure that the visa is issued timely, the candidate should ensure that he/she applies for the same timely, but not sooner than three month's prior to the program's initiation.

Also, remember that the visa will not be issued on the same day. This is a pretty long drawn process. The whole procedure and can take upto 60 days. Make sure the Italian institutions provide the necessary Letter of Acceptance, Letter of Enrollment, Insurance Letter and Course Schedule to complete your visa application materials. A student visa is issued only for the time the program is valid.

The following documents are required to apply for a student visa for Italy. It is a mandatory requirement that the student applying for a visa must produce the following:
  • One passport size photograph;
  • One application form duly completed and signed at the Consulate;
  • Passport valid three months over planned stay in Italy
  • A letter of acceptance from school or University in Italy indicating place, duration of the course and dates of attendance;
  • A letter addressed to this Italian Consulate, stating that you own private means of support. If you are a recipient of financial aid, please submit a statement
  • A letter from your bank indicating your account number, financial status, and balance. The letter must be signed by a bank official
  • Flight reservations (round trip)
Cost:
The cost of a 90 day Student's visa would cost about 90 US$.

Study Expenses & Educational Aid

The DSU office (Diritto allo Studio Universitario) provides with financial aid, scholarships and grants for every international student studying in Italy. Also, every international student is entitled to the same benefits as Italian students when it comes to scholarships, student loans, housing assistance, etc.

The DSU office not only helps the student in providing financial aid, it also provides other services like counseling and information on extra curricular activities, sport, transport and other matters as well.

The education system of Italy is divided into three groups, according to the grade. These groups are 1st cycle, 2nd cycle and 3rd cycle programmes. While 1st cycle is undergraduate level, 2nd cycle is post graduate level and 3rd cycle is doctorate level.

College Admission Procedure

Admission in Undergraduate level or 1st cycle Degree Program: If a student wants to study in undergraduate level in Italy, he or she will need to hold a School Leaving Qualification. Before a student can join an educational institution in Italy, they will be examined by the institution to permit the entrance to the college or university. This is an entrance exam in which the students will be evaluated for their quality and then decision will be taken either to admit him or her or not in the college or university.

Admission in Postgraduate Level or 2nd Cycle Degree Program: Before a student gets admission in postgraduate level, they must hold an undergraduate level qualification at the universities/colleges of Italy. Also, note that the student is eligible to study the same course in postgraduate level that they had studied in the undergraduate level. The student applying for a postgraduate level course will need to qualify the entrance examination before getting admission in the particular college/university in Italy.

Admission in Doctorate Level or 3rd Cycle Degree Program: For getting admission in the Doctorate Level Program, a student must hold a postgraduate degree. The student's foreign degree will be evaluated by the college/university where the student has applied for a doctorate level program and then it will be decided whether the student meets the general requirements as well as specific requirements of the university/college.

PhD Programs

Having a Master's degree is a prior requirement that a student needs to fulfill before applying for a PhD course in Italy. The students who have a foreign qualification that is not officially recognized by the Italian educational institutions need to attach a translation in English of the same degree certificate with the exams and the marks obtained which needs to be signed by the students themselves. This will allow the Scientific Board to declare the equivalence valid for the purpose of selection of the students for the course. The coursework initially consists of 15 papers that a student needs to clear. The students of the PhD program in Economics and Management follow a common curriculum during the first two terms and specialized courses during their third term. Furthermore, it is possible for a student to spend up to one year working at a research centre in Italy. 2. BA in Fine Arts: Studio Arts: This degree in Studio Arts is a full-time 4 year program which is designed in such a way that the student learns about visual arts but with a traditional education about liberal arts. There are several tracks in this course which a student can choose. These tracks are available to a student after he/she has completed the foundation training. The choices available are: art restoration, digital media, drawing, graphic design, lithography, painting, print-making or photography.

3. BA in Fine Arts: Art History: The degree in Art History is a 4 year degree program which provides a survey of western art and culture as well as an in-depth study of the selected periods. It is also required that a student pursuing BA in Art History must pursue an alternative discipline, preferably a foreign language. 4. BA in English: Theatre: The BA in English with a concentration in theatre helps the students to hone their writing and performance skills in the media and theatre business.
